About Penrith
Penrith is an attractive market town with 1000 years of history. It is located at the junction of the M6 motorway with the A66 trunk road (M6 Junction 40). With a station on the main West Coast railway line, it is easily accessible by car, coach or rail.
With great accessibility and a wide range of shops and places to eat, Penrith is excellent for an overnight stay during your cycle or car tour and a great base for visiting the famous sights of the North West. The Lake District is only a few minutes drive away while Hadrian’s Wall, the Pennines, Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales are little further.
In the vicinity of the town are Rheged Discovery Centre, Lowther Castle Gardens (which are undergoing major restoration), important pre-historic sites such as Long Meg and Mayburgh Henge and country houses such as Hutton in the Forest and Dalemain. For the young, or young at heart, Eden Ostrich World is also close by.
Ullswater in less than 10 miles away and offers some of the most beautiful views in the Lake District, wonderful walking and lake trips on the famous Ullswater Steamers
A number of major events and festivals take place annually in the area. These include the biggest ceramics festival in Europe - Pot Fest in the Park and Pot Fest in the Pens, the annual May Day Carnival and the Lowther Country Fair. Programmes of summer events are also organised on the Lowther Estate and at Dalemain, Hutton in the Forest and Rheged.
